چکیده

The excessive deposition of liver lipids which is produced in rats by feeding diets containing cholesterol is inhibited by choline and betaine (Best & Ridout, 1933; Best, Channon & Ridout, 1934). Choline was shown to affect both glycerides and cholesteryl esters but deposition of the former was inhibited more than that of the latter. .Many preventive and curative experiments were subsequently reported and the results were in general agreement with those of the earlier investigations. In the early studies no evidence of any significant waning inthe lipotropic effect of cholinewas observed with or without cholesterol in the diet (Best & Ridout, 1936). Himsworth & Glynn (1944), however, report that this occurs in cholesterol-fed rabbits under certain experimental conditions. Furthermore, it has been stated by McHenry & Patterson (1944) that inositol but not choline has a definite effect on cholesterol metabolism. It became evident, therefore, that further studies were necessary to determine (a) the relative lipotropic effects of choline and inositol, and (b) the duration of the action of these agents when fed separately and in combination. These problems have been reinvestigated in cholesterol-fed rats observed for periods up to 16 weeks. The effectiveness of choline in preventing

Comparison of the Lipotropic Effects of Choline, Inositol, and Lipocaic in Rats

In a preliminary communication (1) we reported that inositol would prevent the development !of that type of fatty liver, characterized by a high content of cholesterol, which is produced in rats by the administration of biotin. The lipotropic a,ction of inositol has been studied with other types of fatty livers and has been compared with the effects of two other lipotropic agents, choline and l...

Further observations on the lipotropic need for inositol.

Inositol was originally shown to be a lipotropic agent in rats maintained under special conditions (1) ; the animals were depleted of fat and of B vitamins by maintenance for 3 weeks on a fat-free, high carbohydrate diet, and during a subsequent week fat synthesis was promoted by a supplement of B vitamins and a beef liver fraction. Under these conditions the rats developed markedly fatty liver...

The effect of lowered environmental temperature on lipid metabolism in rats fed on normal and high-fat, high-cholesterol diets.

I. Prolonged intermittent exposure to reduced environmental temperature (+ 2") produced in rats given a nutritionally well-balanced diet a decrease in the concentration of esterified fatty acids in the blood serum, liver and epididymal fat tissue. In the last there was a significant increase in the unesterified: esterified fatty acid ratio. The hepatic synthesis of fatty acids from [1-14C]aceta...

Nutritional and Hormonal Induction of Fatty Liver Syndrome and Effects of Dietary Lipotropic Factors in Egg-type Male Chicks

This experiment was conducted with male chicks to investigate the influence of hormones and nutrients on the development of fatty liver syndrome (FLS) as well as the effects of dietary lipotropic factors on hepatic fat accumulation and lipogenic enzyme gene expression. A total of two-hundred sixteen 4-wk-old Hy-Line male chicks were divided into six groups and fed an experimental diet (T1, low-...

The modification of choline deficiency by simultaneous pantothenic acid deficiency.

It was found recently (1) that feeding a cholesterol-rich diet to pantothenic acid-deficient rats did not result in the fatty livers and high levels of cholesterol in liver and serum seen in comparable animals maintained on a normal diet. Decrease in food intake appeared not to account for this phenomenon, since the food intake of the deficient group on a body weight basis was higher than that ...
